Black BRAND’s Legacy Day 2025 was a powerful gathering of community leaders, entrepreneurs and change-makers, all united by a mission to foster economic empowerment, equity and sustainable growth. The event featured thought-provoking discussions, strategic networking and cultural enrichment, all aligning with Black BRAND’s 150-Year Plan—a bold vision for long-term community impact. The event also served as one of our initial gatherings of leaning into our Black BRAND theme of 2025, Regional Renaissance.
Morning Sessions: Media, Technology & Bridging the Wealth Gap
The day kicked off at 8 a.m. with registration and networking over coffee, setting the tone for collaboration and innovation. At 9 a.m., Black BRAND introduced our 150-Year Plan, emphasizing the importance of strategic economic development, which Blair Durham began setting the tone for with her reflections from the CEO just days before in this letter to our Black BRAND community.
A highlight of the morning was the session on “The Future of Media and Technology”, led by Dr. Akosua Acheampomaa Nwala, Director of the NSU Innovation Center. She explored how emerging technologies can help close the racial wealth gap and create new economic opportunities for Black entrepreneurs and professionals. Attendees then participated in dynamic table talks, brainstorming ways to implement these insights within their communities.
Mid-Morning to Afternoon: Health Equity & Economic Impact
The next session, “Social Determinants of Health,” featured insights from J.R. Locke (Ed Logics) and Karen Bailey (Youth Earn-and-Learn Jobs-for-Kids). This discussion tackled the economic impact of health disparities and emphasized collaborative healthcare solutions to drive long-term change.
During the Lunch & Learn, attendees engaged in a wellness-focused workshop led by Beverly Grandison of Premier Health and Wellness.

- Meal prep strategies for busy professionals
- Understanding and combating insulin resistance
- Increasing daily water intake
- Leveraging technology for better health outcomes
Afternoon Sessions: Education, Mental Health & Affordable Housing
The afternoon featured a critical discussion on “Public Education and Mental Health”, led by Clarence Harris, CPA, and Cheryl Poe. This session addressed educational equity, AI-driven academic advancements, affordable legal programs and the role of mental health in bridging the racial wealth gap.
Closing the event, a fireside chat with local realtor Terria Galvez provided actionable strategies for tackling the affordable housing crisis in Hampton Roads. Attendees gained practical insights on innovative housing solutions, community engagement and homeownership empowerment.
Cultural Enrichment: Live Art, Music, Storytelling & Cuisine 
Legacy Day wasn’t just about discussions—it was an immersive cultural experience celebrating Black heritage:
- Artist Derek Green painted a stunning rendering of Black BRAND’s logo symbolizing unity and resilience.
- Jazz pianist McQuay Morton performed soulful melodies, offering a history lesson on jazz’s cultural roots and Duke Ellington’s standout composition strategy.
- LaQuita Staten (Atumpan Edutainment) captivated the audience with traditional African storytelling, reinforcing themes of community and perseverance.
- Chef Antony Otey of The Heroic Chef delighted everyone with refreshing beverages and healthy dishes throughout the event.
